Automobiles
Cars are expensive in India. For example, a new Honda Accord can cost you nearly $45,000 - compared to a fully loaded Accord that can be bought for under $25,000 in the US. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to ship foreign cars to India. The government mandates that all cars must be right-hand drive versions and customs duties, even on transfer of residence bases, are prohibitively high.
Ditto is the case for motorcycles. US residents who are used to riding their 750cc and up motorycles will be disappointed to note that the customs duties alone can cost up to 3 times the value of the motorcycle. And there are no company owned service centers for most brands - so maintenance can get tricky. If you are an avid motorcycle enthusiast, consider going out on a few long rides in the US before you move to India!
Miscellaneous items
It is better to buy in the West many miscellaneous consumables - flashlights, rechargeable batteries, printer cartridges, computer/telecommunications cables such as USB, HDMI, Ethernet - since quality in India is often suspect or the prices are more expensive. An excellent way is to make a list of such items and buy them online while still in the West - so that they arrive home, prepacked, hopefully with free shipping and no taxes.
